What to Do When You Feel Like You’re Losing Your Patience Every Day

May 15, 2025

“I love my child so much… but why am I always yelling?”

It’s a sentence I hear often — and one I’ve said to myself, too.

Because the truth is, most parents aren’t waking up in the morning planning to lose their patience. You’re not trying to yell, snap, or feel out of control. But when the same battles repeat day after day… it’s no wonder your nervous system starts to fray.

Maybe it’s the refusal to get dressed.
Maybe it’s the endless bedtime requests.
Maybe it’s the way you feel like no one’s listening unless you raise your voice.

The pattern feels stuck. You react, regret it, then promise to do better. But the next day, the same thing happens.

Let me tell you something important: you’re not failing. You’re just depleted.

Why Your Patience Is Running Out

Parenting is emotionally demanding. You're managing your child’s big emotions while juggling your own — often with very little rest or space to reset. And when your nervous system is in survival mode, staying calm feels nearly impossible.

You’re not lacking willpower. You’re lacking regulation tools and support.

The good news? You can break the cycle — and it starts by focusing not on your child’s behavior, but on your own emotional state first.

Here are a few small shifts that can make a big difference:

  •  Name what you’re feeling. Even silently saying, “I’m overwhelmed right now,” gives your brain a signal to slow down.

  •  Step away if you need to. Taking a pause is not failure—it’s wise. It gives you time to reset before re-engaging.

  •  Use an anchor phrase. Try repeating: “I can be the calm in the chaos,” or “I can pause before I respond.” It helps ground your body and mind.

  •  Repair when needed. You won’t get it right every time. But apologizing and reconnecting afterward models something powerful: emotional accountability.

You don’t have to be calm all the time to be a good parent. You just need tools to help you come back to calm when it matters most.

And you deserve support in doing that.

If you’re feeling stuck in the cycle of yelling and regret, know that you’re not alone—and there is a way forward.

In my class, Calm Within the Chaos at Home, I teach practical, real-life tools to help you reset, regulate, and respond with more confidence and less overwhelm.
